School History

Government Higher Secondary School, Thiksay Established in 1921 and it stands as one of the oldest and most respected educational institutions in the Ladakh region. Founded during an era when modern educational facilities in remote Himalayan areas were extremely limited, the school was built with a clear vision: to bring formal education to the children of Thiksay and neighbouring villages, while firmly preserving the unique culture and moral values of Ladakh. In its initial years, the school functioned with minimal infrastructure and limited teaching resources. Classes were conducted in simple rooms, and students frequently had to walk long distances through difficult weather conditions just to attend. Despite these hardships, the people of Thiksay showed immense enthusiasm for education and continuously supported the growth of the institution. During this period, education focused primarily on basic literacy, numeracy, discipline, and moral education. Teachers worked under highly challenging circumstances, serving not only as educators but also as trusted guides and mentors for the local community.

Achievements

• PM SHRI Recognition: Selected as a model school for the implementation of NEP 2020.
• Academic Excellence: Consistent board results with students securing top regional ranks.
• As awareness about the importance of education grew across Ladakh, the school gradually expanded its student capacity and infrastructure. Over the decades, classrooms, laboratories, library facilities, and a playground were introduced to enhance the learning environment.
  
• Originally a primary and middle-level institution, the school was eventually upgraded to a Higher Secondary School.
  This pivotal upgrade enabled local students to continue their higher studies locally without the need to migrate elsewhere.
  
• Consequently, the school became an important canter of learning for nearby villages, contributing significantly to improving literacy and educational awareness in the area.
